장생포는 대한민국 울산 남구에 위치하고 있는 포구이다.

1986년 포경산업이 한국에서 법적으로 금지되기 전에 이곳에는 많은 사람이 살고 있었다. 그들은 고래잡이 및 관련업종에 종사하였다고 한다. 포경사업이 금지되고 마을은 쇠퇴했고, 현재는 소수의 사람들만 남아있다. 2000명 가까이되던 장생포 초등학생의 수는 현재 60명 남짓 된다. 마을 곳곳에 폐허들과 사람이 살다 떠난 흔적들이 놀랍도록 생생하게 남겨져있다.

지리적으로 이곳은 특별하다. ‘도시의 섬’이라고 불리는 이곳은 중공업단지로 둘러싸여있고, 공장의 굴뚝에서는 24시간 연기가 피어 오른다. 포구의 선박들이 끊임없이 뱃고동소리를 낸다.

현재 마을 공동체를 살리기위해 도시재생 프로젝트가 진행되고 있다.

Jangsengpo is a harbor in south Ulsan, Korea.

The town was very busy and vital, before the whaling was banned in 1986 in South Korea. A large amount of population worked in the whaling industry, however almost of them had been leaved since 1986. Now, Jangsengpo elementary school, which had over 2000 students, only has around 60 students. There are many vacant housings and abandoned stuffs with its strangely vivid presence.

The location of this town is special. Many people refer it to ‘island’ even though the town is not geographically island. The region is entirely surrounded, and segregated by heavy industries. The workers of industries do not live in this town. They commute from farther outside. So, the town became more isolated. The smoke rises from the huge pipes in 24 hours, ships on the port sound the boat horn continually.

Now the urban regeneration project runs in Jangsengpo.
